The European Association of Conservatoires (AEC) and the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) organised the first arts-focused event of the European Year for Creativity & Innovation 2009 on Tuesday 20 January in Brussels. The two organisations presented a set of recommendations to EU institutions and Member States, focusing in particular on the role of arts education in the EYCI 2009 and beyond.
The European Commission is organising a major European conference on creativity and innovation on 2 and 3 March 2009 in Brussels. The event will explore and identify examples of best practice among projects that have received funding through several European Union programmes and funds. It will be accompanied by a special exhibition showing the results of 20 star projects from around Europe that are good examples of the EU contribution, highlighted by the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009.

The fourth European Youth Week celebrates twenty years of European programmes for youth. Events will be organised in the 31 countries participating in the Youth in Action programme and a central event will take place in Brussels from November 2 to 6. This year's Youth Week is also dedicated to "intercultural dialogue" – the EU's theme of 2008.
